I hate to admit it, but I drilled mine out trying to remove the plug. Now the spring is visible. I have ridden about 1500 miles since then without any trouble. Someday I will buy a new carb, but it doesn't seem to have had any effect on the running, and I still have a little backfiring, but it is easily controlled with the throttle by not backing off all the way when shifting and keeping a bit of throttle on while disengaging the clutch.
